Has anyone tried getting grants to help cushion the cost of starting up their business, or expanding - or does anyone know of someone who has tried this?

What have your experiences been?

Yes, I have attempted this route.
My experiences have been less than satisfactory - unless you are a minority women, essentially broke and are trying to remove yourself from the welfare tit.
approach it this way, the government is already WAY, WAY too intrusive, why give them yet another mechanism to govern your life?
