Homeowner needs advice

Any pros want to give me some advice on the best way to spend $1500 - $2000 on a mower? I have about a 1/2 acre of new bermuda sod on a slope with a few elevation changes and a couple of small berms. I want to cut the lawn in no more than an hour and I want it to look great (of course). My installer recommended against a rider with a belly deck. He suggested a Gravely walk behind. I am willing to spend the money up front if the mower will last a long time.

Thanks!

This will probably get moved to the HOMEOWNER section, but....

I would suggest a 48" Belt drive walkbehind with at least a 14hp engine. Any manufacturer would suffice. Good used for $1000 to $1500. New they are $3000.

36" eXmark Metro belt drive will run you new around $2000-$2300. 1/2 acre is not much. Probably about 1/2 hour for a 1/2 acre. The exmark mulch kit is awesome on bermuda. I cut 90% bermuda and 10% zoysia with the mulch kits and it looks like you bagged the lawn. I use the mulch kits on all my lawns. The results on bermuda are awesome.

I'm with 65HOSS, I like the Exmark idea with the mulch kit. It is a better mower than you were recommended, and the 36" is easier to control, and less likely to scalp. you will have your lawn done in 30 min or so and if you get lazy, put a proslide on it. You will never buy another mower if you go this route.

keifer, why would you push it? (actually, I think you suggested a 21" push mower in another thread recently too?).

Also, why would you recommend a 32" over a 36", especially if the 36" exmark can be bought new for $2000 as opposed to $2800 for a smaller mower? Ya lost me.

I noticed Kiefer recommended a 21" push in another thread also. Mowing with a 21 mower on a slope once a week is not my idea of a good time. A friend mows his lawn with a 21'' self-propelled. It is about the same size as mine and it takes him 2+ hours. Any reason you recommend the 21" Keifer?

ellbaker,

For a 1/2 acre lot, you are crazy to use a 21"!
Either a 36" or a 48" belt drive walk behind will be perfect. The 48" will just get it done quicker! Someone said that they tend to scalp more, but thats not always the case. You will find a larger selection of 48"ers used.

Take care, and happy mowing!

I have a 36 Metro and it is all the mower you need. With the mulch kit you will probably never need to buy another machine.
