Lowering Tire Pressure

I have encountered some pretty bumpy yards and have read about lowering tire pressure to ease the ride.
Does this really work that well and will the tires suffer because of the lower pressure?

Yes and maybe. Depends on how the tires are rated for load. Too much weight on too little pressure can cause cords to pull out of the rubber. If you have 4 or 6-ply tires, it might not help though.
