what type of fertilizer to use?

I am new to this part of the business and am wondering what brand might be the best for the money. without doing soil tests, i plan on applying a general purpose 21-7-14 mixture. is this the wrong approach to it all? if i dont see results from that then i plan on doing soil samples of course. i just want to play it safe. any replies are appreciated. thanks

what brand is your fert...others may chime in based on that. Do you have a web link to the makeup of the fert?
