Mag 1000 silver rod purpose

What purpose does the silver rod mounted vertically serve on the 1000 series units?

I understand how the magnetic balancing cone, mounting it horizontally and all works but the steel rod is stumping me.

Look about half way down the page you'll see that the guage rod is for checking blade straightness - or tip tracking.
