scag walk behind electrical problem??

I have a late 80's or early 90's 48" scag belt driven walk behind. I purchased it 5 years ago and use it privately. About 2 years ago i had trouble starting it. If i really played around with the shifter i could get it to start. I brought it to a mechanic and he didn't have the time to figure it out so he showed me how to unplug a wire on the engine and it starts 1 st or second pull everytime then to shut it down i have to plug the wires back together. When the mower is running (wires unplugged) the keys, and safety levers dont work. This means i can start it in gear and with blades engaged and also the blades dont disengage when i let go of the safety levers. this just scares me because my yard has a few hills and dont want to get hurt by this mower. Does anybody know what could be wrong or where to check first. i really dont want to lose my foot. Thanks for any advice, scott

Follow the shifter linkage till you find the saftey switch. Repair or replace the bad switch.
