my dads 94 dually 4x4 has a 6.5 turbo diesel. he loves the truck and the engine and now that the warranty has expired he is looking for some better performance. What can be done (within a budget) to help? what is available to and is it a do-it-yourself project? frahmie

Try the diesel page for 6.2-6.5 gm diesels. All that you could want and more is there.
www.6.2-6.5-dieselpage.com
The easiest thing would be a new computer chip, unless he has the last of the mechanical pumps, then a twist of the injector will help. It all depends on his budget, intercoolers are available, along with exhaust, and muffler upgrades, even aftermarket turbos.
Shop around at the site, they options are limitless.
Dino
----------
Professional Ice and Snow Management
Products:Services:Equipment www.sima.org

http://fiss.com/Banks/Banksmenu.htm This site I think is the home of Gale Banks, who's company specializes in hopping up trucks like yours. It should include prices.

Let me know how you make out with modifying your 6.5,my dad has one in his 94 1500 2wd,It is pretty peppy but gets 15mpg with 3.42gears.It is hard to hear his turbo,I put a guage on to check boost,it's fine. He is out of warranty by time,it only has 67,000 miles on it.He drove my real diesel and wishes his could keep up,so he wants to go with hypertech powerprogrammer and exhaust and see what it does. He had a new pump put on under warranty,(what a surprise)but other than that it has been great.
----------
John D
The reason you wont hear the turbo on a 6.5 compared to a PS or cummins is that they boost 18-20 psi, and the 6.5 is only 6-8 psi.
the new duramax will be in the 18-20psi range.
The 6.5 is a higher compression engine like 21:1 compared to 18:1 on the competition. And they had to run a lower boost so as not to grenade the engine.
BTW most pump failures were because of bad lift pumps or PMD failures in the pumps. the pump itself is a good product, most GM dealerships just dont know how to properly trouble shoot problems related to the injection system.
Dino
----------
Professional Ice and Snow Management
Products:Services:Equipment www.sima.org

Dino, the lift pump went bad about six months before the pump,we found out when the filter housing wouldnt fill after changing the filter,we wired the pump direct and it wouldnt fill. The dealer replaced it,then 6 months later the injection pump went,so they said, but I think it was just the lift pump again, when we got it back I looked at the pump tag-it was the same and never touched,I crawled under and there was a new lift pump looking back at me.It took 3 weeks for the dealer to fix the truck,It seems there is only 1 diesel mechanic for 10 dealers. The 6.5 is a very smooth and refined diesel, almost could pass for a gas motor from the cab.I almost bought one, being a former GM mechanic and all. Then I used my dad's for a weekend and it wasn't good enough on fuel to buy it over a gas motor. The same indirect injection that makes it quiet, also makes it inefficient and hard to start, and limits power because of emissions(smoke).I jumped ship to Dodge and caught a lot of heat from my friends and family. After 2 years with the Dodge I have found that GM makes a more friendly truck,it's lower, quieter, smoother and it's diesel is very polite. My Dodge is the bully,it's loud, tall, the overloads bang on bumps, and it's diesel sounds like a KW's.
----------
John D
