I need some advice on what to do next in my backyard. (It was all weeds)

I have been taking very good care of my front lawn. The back yard is another story. I have not been in my back yard in several months. I let my dogs back there the other day and noticed that all the weeds were knee high. It was time to mow so the dogs could have their backyard back.

Here is the issue. What I mowed back there was almost all weeds. Some were very bushy weeds with one inch stalks. There was little to no grass at all. Anyway, I mowed the back and there isn't anything taller than my ankle now. What do I do next?

Do I go to the Home Depot and buy some weed killer? If so, what kind? I have 1050sqft in my back yard. I am not too worried about the pretty green grassy lawn just yet. I would rather apply some strong weed killer.

As for the weed killer, I would rather use a solid seed-like weed killer that can be spread over the yard. I don't really care for the spray on kind.

Thank you very much for any help you can provide me.
