trees died

I have a situation where there are about 200 trees on a property 1-2 years old which were all fertilized last fall. The homeowner thought it would be a good idea to fertilize again this spring and hired another company to do so. All of the maples lost there leaves a month or less later and look like they are dead. A half dozen or so concolors and fir's turned dead over night. All of these trees had new growth on them prior to the season. So the owner wants me to warranty the trees and I am stuck between a rock and hard place. I believe the trees were put into shock with overfertilized. What do you think? How do you prove it?
