Transmission Cooler

I am thinking about installing a transmission cooler on my truck and I have a few questions. The truck is an '89 chevy silverado reg cab short bed with a 4.3L V6 and 4sp. auto.

1. I tow on average 2000-2500lbs. Is it necessary to install a cooler?

2. How difficult is it to install?

Take a look and see if it doesn't already have one. I have been amazed at the vehicles now days that come with coolers.

How easy or how hard will depend on if Chev put tapped holes in the trans case for threading in a hose bib.

All automatic transmission vehicles have at least a cooler integral with the radiator. If you wish to upgrade to an out-front oil-to-air cooler its just a matter of plumbing it in line with the stock radiator oil-to-water cooler. Disconnect the inlet line from the radiator, hook one end of the cooler to this line and the other end to the radiator outlet fitting.

You really need the radiator cooler also to keep the trans fluid at a stable temp otherwise during cooler weather the trans will never warm up.

Absolutely. You should have one. The part will cost you $30-$50, but a new tranny will cost $1500-$3000.

If you have rubber lines, you can even just cut one in half and link up the cooler right there (using strong hose clamps).

one thing you will need to figure out is wich of the lines is supply and return to the trans. you need to flow from trans to radiator to external becuase of the heat in the radiator.

Even more important...

You probably have a 3.08:1 rear axle ratio. That's what my '89 4.3 V6 GMC1500 had.

Go to at least 3.42, but 3.73 or 4.10 would not hurt. Go staight to 3.73 if you have the 700r4 overdrive auto trans.
