Are there certain warm turf that can't be dethatched?

I have a homeowner who has zoysia el toro and another landscaper told him that you can't dethatch that type of grass. The only type of grass I ever dethatch happend to be zoysia but a different variety.

Do you guys know of any other types of turf that can't be dethatched (with a billy goat)?

I only have warm turfs here in Hawaii.

Thank you for your wisdom.

That landscaper does not know what he is talking about. If the El Toro is overgrown and thatchy, run a vertical mower over it in several directions, even out the final cut with a reel mower and NEVER, EVER allow anyone to maintain that lawn with a rotary mower again. I am going to guess that this lawn has been maintained with a rotary mower. An El Toro lawn mowed weekly with a reel mower at 3/4" or less does not build up thatch. Do not ever do this to centipede or st augustine. They do not have the resilient root and stolon network of say a zoysia or bermuda. Aggressive dethatching of st augustine or centipede will wipe out the lawn.
