Refurbishing an old lawn

I bought a house in upstate NY on approx. two acres.I have about a half acre that is 85% weeds the rest of the lawn is somewhat ok. My problem is that i have a sandy loam and where the grass is a little thin I have a big ant problem. If I can figure a way to kill the ants ,without contaminating my well , that would be a start. I just bought a 2005 walker mtghs 26 efi and I can't keep the mower running true because of all the bumps on my lawn from the anthills. So I guess my question is : Can I kill the ants without harming my drinking water and how do i smooth out my lawn. I did drag a heave duty rake behind my four wheeler one time but all I accomplished was a thorough dethatching. Thanks for any advice.

You need more grass--not less ants. May I suggest an overseed and a professional lawn service. Plus irrigation.
