Winterizer, what is the deal?
Should it 100 percent quick release or not? A phd told me all quick release so it grow and strengthen the roots- slow release will continue to release nitrogen when the soil is frozen-no good
Ive also was told from someone else that you need some slow release because it wont volitize or leach the first rain, how much nitrogen can the grass take it in one application ? how much is lost in one rain through leaching or volitization? |

This is a link from Purdue University-Indiana. Also, do a search for winterizer, you'll get lots of info. I use quick release N in November. I use 1 pound of N per 1,000sqft. Temps are usually between 35-55, so soil is not frozen. Most fert will be absorbed into the soil and not washed away over frozen soil.

drobin-
I like to add a little quick release with iron at the very tail end of the season (as in right now). To further expound, I like to fert with a little higher k-p in the early fall so as to encourage good strong root growth in the Sept, Oct and November months. One reason I like to add a little extra n in the late fall is to help neutralize the added carbon content from the mulched up/ ground up leaves. Time release capsules put down this time of year are still there in the spring. At that point, I don't consider it a Winterizer, but rather, an early spring app.
I prefer September/October for winterizer so it actually gets into the turf and is used b4 the ground freezes. We average winter freeze-up of the soil around Thanksgiving, unless there is heavy snow cover b4 it freezes. Give or take a month or 2.
