ferris engine help

I have a Ferris IS1000z w/ a blown Kawasaki FH680V 23hp engine. I looked at the parts manual for the IS1000z that covers my model and it also shows it configured w/ a kohler CV23S 23hp which I can get brand new for $500 as opposed to at least $1500 for the new Kawasaki. My question is: Are the models any different besides the engine? I can't really decipher the parts diagrams. Can I simply take off the Kawasaki and put on the Kohler. What should I look for in differences. Crankshaft size etc? Or who can I calll to find out? Any help would be appreciated-Thank you

Yah check crank sizes. Do they both use the same electric clutch? If they do then it should be ok. Also may need different choke/throttle cables. And some rewiring.

Figure another 200 probably for a muffler since the kaw one wont fit the kohler.

Thanks pugs. The muffler is a different part number, but the clutch is the same. This may be a stupid question, where do I find the crank size? and What kind of rewiring-there are wires to the engine obviously-what do you do if the wires don't match up.

You can get a brand new one for $500 where? Seriously, that would be killer info.

When swapping motors, the main thing is the crank length and diameter. Also check the wiring and throttle/choke cables, see if they are the same or seperate etc. I'm pretty sure if the manual calls for the Kohler, it is the same crank and bolt pattern. Good Luck

Edit, if the clutch is the same, they are definitely the same crank size.

It's a buddy of mine who has the engine not a store or anything or I would kindly pass on the info. How would I go about checking the wiring w/o the engines being side by side-Thanks

Check mainly where the grounds are and how many different spots. They should be fairly similar. Also if the PTO hooks up to the engine or the battery wires.
