Here is some quick math:
1 liter = ~60 cid. So, you want to know how 'good' a 486 cid V-8 is on fuel? Because I couldn't say for sure but I can tell you that when you step on the gas pedal of something that has a 455 under the hood you can literally hear it sucking fuel. No I'm not kidding. Most folks who buy vehicles with them size engines are not concerned about fuel economy. You want economy then stick to 5.0's (~300 cid's), once you get up to a 350 (6L) you're hurting, my 30 gallon gas tank on my 5.9L doesn't last me a week, I'm lucky if I get 300 miles out of it. A 5.0? I used to get 14-15mpg trailered and 12-14 loaded, the 5.0 pulls just fine but everyone keeps wanting more power... Frustrates me to tears but then I guess other people's sons and daughters keep the oil flowing with their blood. Last edited by topsites; 01-15-2010 at 06:53 PM. |

Owning a 2001 8.1 340 HP/455 lb-ft, don't believe all the bad you hear about fuel use. From empty to 17K it still gets 12 MPG, on the highway, at legal + speeds. But that is with 4.10 gears instead of the normal 3.73s. That change alone adds 2K lbs to the towing ability. As for comparing it to the 6.0, forget it. Apples to oranges as far as torque and the 6.0 doesn't have the Allison. Plus the 8.1 is a 250K BIF rated engine. Some produce up to 95 lb-ft more torque than some of the 6.0 engines, or about 1/4 more torque. In the hills, you'd notice it. The 8.1 will run 3200 RPM up a 5% grade at 65 MPH in 4th with a GCVW of 17K. The 6.0 would be more like 4500 RPM to get the power and at its max load maybe down in 3rd gear. And getting no better mileage.
PS Topsite, the GM Vortec 8100 is 496 cubic inches.

Start the engine up there goes a 5 gallon can of fuel start putting your foot into it and now its really guzzling fuel

I worry more about the tires than the gasoline. The outer rears don't last too long.

Well no one owns them, they aren't available anymore and you can get trucks with that engine in em dirt cheap, so what does that tell you?

They are still available with medium trucks. They are cheap because not many people need that much power and don't go with a diesel.
