Diesel fuel ?

A good friend of mine runs a nursery, and uses ALOT of heating oil for the greenhouses. He set up a tank which he uses for his trucks and other diesel equipment. Is this a good idea?? Is heating oil the same EXACT thing as equipment diesel fuel?? I know he gets it for .50$ cheaper per gallon than at the pump.

from what i understand, you cant run straight home heating fuel in the diesels "properly". although diesel is 80% heating oil usually, you still need to add 20-30% kerosene to cut it in the winter time. You can technically do what he is doing, but you arent adding the additives that properly lubricate the engine, like you get from gas station diesel.

I know that in Ontario the reason that you "technically" can't use
heating oil is that there is no road tax included in the price and that's why it's cheaper. We call that "coloured" fuel here because it is dyed pink. But we use it in any "off road" vehicles eg. bobcats, tractors, diesel mowers etc. The MTO (ministry of transportation) has been known to "dip" tanks in diesel vehicles to see if it's coloured or not, if so there is a BIG fine.
