ZTR axle: to lock or not lock?

I was wondering if anyone had any input on the merits of locking versus allowing pivoting on the front axle of a ZTR?

I just bought a used Ariens 1640 and it has the axle lock bolts in place. I'm wondering it make sense to keep them like that or to allow the axle to pivot. What kind of difference can I expect from unlocking the axle?

Thanks

My mower doesn't have the option to allow the front to pivot, but I know what you're talking about. All I can say is, even without pivoting, I'm amazed at how even and smooth my cut is even on the uneven/bumpy ground I have. I'd be curious to see how it turns out if I could let it pivot...like the old rider I had. I have no way to know though.
