Trust me, it is twice as hard as you think. The bolt is just a precaution, you need a gear-puller to get the PTO off of the shaft. In the process of getting it off, you will probably run into something with it when removing when on the mower. Maybe you can do it. I've only had to switch PTOs/pullies when the engine is off of the mower.
