Florida Palm Trees

Florida people,

Post some pictures on here of Palm trees and start a discussion of your favorite palm trees to plant and maintain in Florida.

I guess all of you outside of Florida that have palm trees or like what you saw when you visited Florida can comment on them, but let's keep the topic on those palms that grow in Florida.

My favorite is the Royal Palm, but you need to be at the Vero Beach and below area for it to grow.

Although they are not palms, I miss the sago and queen sagos. They have all been killed by Asian cycad scale. Thankfully the native coontie has survived.

I agree. Royal palm trees are great. I wish we had them up here in Central Florida. Here is a picture of them that I pulled from the Florida Oasis Tree Farm of Tree Town USA:

sago are a nice plant, a cycad not a palm. Seems in my area they are getting a handle on the cycad scale and I am seeing more around again. I like the look of a mature royal on roadsides like in fort myers, silver bismark looks nice in the right spot, like chinese fan palms for smaller residential landscapes. Not a fan of Arecca, addadonia and foxtails are dying every year in my area due to frost and ensuing fungus after the frost. coconuts are ugly most of the time. Canary Island Dates can be great if they are pruned properly and proper fert. phoenix reclinata nice too but can be a lot of work to prune if let go for too long between pruning.

Those look great. Which ones are the easiest to maintain? Are any of them a pain to deal with?

They are all a pain!!! They all make horrible messes, the trees have lots of bugs and critters in them.

The washingtonians have the sharp serated edges, the canaries, reclinatas, date palms, and roebellinis all have sharp tips on them that stick the crap out of you.

However, being a pain is why everyone hates trimming them. I actually enjoy trimming them though. Plus one job always turns into several. I also do alot of trimming for other lawn guys as well.

I had a few friends who were landscapers who would save the palm seed clusters for me. They yield a good oil to use to fuel diesel engines.
