How to regrade back yard

What is the best way to regrade a back yard that has high and low spots causeing water "pools"? I'm thinking of just bringing in new topsoil and regrading the whole backyard with a bobcat without stripping up the existing sod and then reseeding the whole works. Will this work or do you have to strip up the old sod first?

If half your yards lawn is still decent. Fill all low spots with topsoil, apply more topsoil to whole yard 1/4 to 1 inch over top existing lawn. Use enough soil to create the proper slope/grade
Add good quality seed at 3-4lbs/1000ft2
Add starter fertilizer (no or very low nitrogen in it)
rake by hand or power rake mixture into ground 1/4 to 1/2".

Water religiously.

If lawn is shot and you are doing a complete reno. get a harley rake attachment on the bobcat to grade and pulverize with

Topsoil will have a lot of weed seeds in it.
Proper Compost may be an option.

The key is to keep the weeds down while the grass seed has a chance to establish.

The best time to redo a lawn is in the fall. Unless you have an irrigation system.
Good Luck.

A drainage professional can do this best. He will cut trenches and use a laser level to get the slope perfect. Then install plastic drainage tile. Can advise if soil neeeds to be added. Direct water away from house. Do it wrong and it will be worse.
