Amtrak train hits Excavator and lowboy

This happened the other day around here. A lowboy became stuck on a crossing with a new cat 320DL excavator. Soon later a Amtrak train came and smashed into the truck totaling the excavator, lowboy ,and the train engine. No one was seriously hurt.

Then a tractor trailer crashed into the back of another stalled truck going 70 mph. This shut down the hwy for almost 8 hours.

What a numb nut, I would put a guy in the truck ready to go and one guy in the excavator and used the machine to lift the ass end on the trailer right up off the ground and push the truck forward as the drive pulled also. I woulda had the off the tracks in 30 seconds or less. Would messed up the road but ohhh well.Darwin was here.

yeah but most truck drivers are not equipment excavator operators. and its probably not as easy to get on operator on short notice. I also imagine its a pretty regular train.

chalk up another accident to a "professional" driver...

I wouldnt see why if, IF, they got a hold of the police or whatever law enforcement, they couldn't have stopped the trains for a little bit until they got the trailer off the track? There was a wreck here a few weeks ago I saw when I was leaving the grain elevator, some nim rod missed the crossing by a good ten or 15 feet and got their car stuck on the tracks.....and they got the trains stopped from both ways while the wrecker got the car unstuck. Seems like an easily preventable accident from a lot of different angles.

^depends on how far away the train was and how fast it was traveling... and when they got notification that the tracks were blocked...

I, like many here was doing some "Monday morning quarterbacking", pondering the "woulda, coulda, shoulda's", until I saw the following two additional videos...

These videos imply that it was but a short time (few minutes) till the train came and that the train was traveling 79 MPH at the time the brakes were applied.

As an excavator operator, I've been around float trucks getting high centered, usually getting into or out of the job site. Most of the time, the truck driver can get more ground clearance using the hydraulics of the detachable gooseneck. (the truck in the train wreck did not have a detach) I have had to fire up the hoe and swing around putting the bucket on the ground along side the float, reducing the weight and helping "walk" the load over the hump.

Ironically,this last year we had a job involving a road realignment and overpass to eliminate an on grade railroad crossing. In order to get our 400 Komatsu from one side to the other, we would load it on the float and move it. Our lo boy would just clear the crossing in the fully raised position. After a while, it became such a hassle coordinating the truck and the time involved loading and off loading, we just started using some old belting over the tracks and walked the hoe from side to side.



*Ahem* Pay no attention to the growser marks in the pavement.......and if you're from the St. Charles county highway dept., I know nothing...

There probably was lots of things the guy should have done but he was probably chitting bricks.

From another picture I seen of the truck trying to cross before it was hit it didn't look like there was enough room to get under the crossing light bar.

For one thing if you have a hump to slide a lowbed over you take a run at it.
