Peerless Transmission problems

I have a Peerless 700-039 that will only drive from the right side. I have the manual and feel I have followed the directions for the opening the transmission. It will not come apart. The top of the tranny seems to catch on the shaft that comes out of the top for gear selection. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Clean the end of the shifter shaft then install a longer screw, Then hold the top cover up and tap the shift shaft through the cover.

Sounds like the drive shaft/coupler or trans drive shaft splines have stripped on that one side....
