welding galvanized pipe?

Seems to me that welding galvanized pipe is a big no-no because it give off poison gases. Am I remembering this correctly? Thanks

you are correct, if you are to weld it i would do it outside , whatever you do , don't inhale the fumes

Use a grinder or wire wheel to remove the galvanizing. In addition to being bad for your health the zinc makes for a lousy weld.

You just haven't lived untill you experience zinc poisoning!I laughed at my buddy when we did our first Galv. job,we would be cutting and welding this crap for about 3 weeks."wear a mask and use your fan to blow it away"whatever ,"you'll be sorry"yep,ok.,Later that night i woke up with a terrible stomach ache,i was sweating like a pig yet i was freezing cold,i called my bud at about 3 am to ask him what to do?"wear a mask and use your fan dumb azz!"Should i go to the emergency room?"nope, been there, done that, they just send you home, nothing they can do!"These were extreme amounts of zinc that caused this, never happened again!

If you are welding galvinized steel and you smell a garlic smell when your welding your breathing in the fumes and stop you will get sick. The only thing that will work is wear a resparator that supplies fresh air there are welding helmets out there that have a fresh air supply.

You will notice when you grind galvinized steel it won't spark until your down to bare steel you will get sparks and to weld the pieces the area where your welding should be bare metal. The best way to clean up galvinzed is use a sandbaster but this does remove too much of the galvinizing so you will have to spray on the cold galvinizing stuff in areosol can.

I have welded lots of galvinized coated steel as its used alot for marine uses here on the West Coast I never gotten badly sick but I try my damndest not to breath in the fumes.

An old man I used to work with. Told me to drink a lot of milk when welding galvanized. We were welding some parts that we could not clean the galvanizing off.
I drank a couple of glasses of milk each night after getting home from work and I did not get sick.

TOOLS1 is right drinking milk does help I forgot about that something about the calcium in the milk absorbing the excessive zinc poisoning.

The best thing todo is avoid breathing the fumes from welding galvanized steel it will make you very ill and who knows what the long time effects will be.
