I'm interested in this topic also as I will be doing this for the first year. One more question - Does any one use Pennmulch? Good or not so good?

It would probably depand on where you live. Here in NC I use Lesco's Transition Blend Fescue and love it. It's made for this area and does a really good job!

Kirby,

What varieties of fescue are in the transition blend? I called the Lesco in Nashville and didn't really get any helpful information from the idiot on the phone. The information they sent me was on turfgrasses in general, no specific information like blends of fescues, etc.

I am currently waiting on some more information from another source, to see what they offer.

In the past I have used just plain old Ky 31 for the customer that doesn't want to spend alot of money on renovating their yard, but wants something besides weeds. I have also used some Confederate, Falcon II and Rebel when overseeding lawns. These are varieties that are recommended for my area.

I like the Double Eagle for overseeding. If the lawn has some sun, and many larger bare areas, then something with some blue in it. This is cool season, of course.

JAC: THE RIDE ON WORKS WELL. I FERTILIZE PART TIME (I WORK 7-3 M-F AT A PLANT )I HAVE 125 + ACCOUNTS. LARGEST 95,000 SF,SMALLEST 2200 SF ALMOST 100 % I RIDE. IT TOOK 1 HR. TO GET USE TO IT AND ABOUT 20 LAWNS TO GET THE HANG OF IT.
WELL BUILT,NOT MUCH TO GO WRONG. THEY ARE GREAT (SO FAR) AT THE MAIN OFFICE. FOR ME IT IS WORTH 4000 FOR IT. I CANT BELEIVE THAT I DID WITH OUT IT ALL THIS TIME. THE ONLY DRAW BACK IS I HAVE NOT FOUND ANY FUNGICIDE THAT I CAN SPRAY OUT OF IT. AND I PUT ON 10 LBS..MOST LIQUID BROADLEAF WEED CONTROLS WORK WELL,BUT WHEN I SPRAY IT GETS ON MY LEGS. (I AM GOING TO HAVE A DRAPE MADE).

WHAT PRODUCTS DID YOU SPRAY OUT OF YOUR WALK BEHIND UNIT?

Davis, I may have already emailed you this but here is a label off my load last year:
I buy by the pallett and get seed for $0.88 cent a pound at Lesco, if you buy from Home Depot the same seed id $1.36 a pound here in NC. I search the palletts at Lesco and find the one that has zero weed or noxious weed seed.

Transition Blend

I use the Transition Blend as well (I'm in Virginia). It has worked well for the customers who have watered after I have renovated. The local Lesco guys told me last week that K31 will be as expensive as tall fescue blends this year. Anyone who uses the K31 is an idiot.

From the land of grass seed..

Looks like the entire crop of ryegrass, fescues and bents is in the barn this year with no damage from rain. Most of the perennial ryegrass's and bent grasses and fescuse are grwon here in the Willamette Valley. Over 500,000 acres this year. I am a firm believer in good seed. I specify quality in all our hydroseed mixes and it makes a hell of a difference in the quality of turf and the after cut apperances. Any of the quality turfseeds and blends work well. We ae now using Futura 3000 from Pickseed. It's a blend of Fiesta, Dasher and something else. Works for golf courses, lawns and sports fields. I overseed two sports fields 3 months ago and they start playing a couple of weeks. Aerate it once a week and reel cut two times per week. Yes,looks good. These are some names of seed sompanies here in Oregon.

Turf Research, Pickseed, Turfseed, Barenbrug, EF Burlinghams. Try searchs on Oregon Ryegrass Commission.

Good seed equals good turf.

We don't use a hell of a lot of fescue in this part of Oregon and bluegrass justs rust out.
