Just the friction of the shaft on the gear will get the chuck to still turn a bit. If it's just that, it is an inexpensive part (unless you're handy enough to make something yourself), but gearboxes can be more difficult to reassemble than electronics in the original box. How on earth to they get all that stuff into the cardboard boxes anyway?
