Kohler Command Pro vs Briggs Professional

Need your thoughts on which is better - the Kohler Command Pro horizontal motor or the Briggs Professional Vertical shaft motor. Everything else is equivalent - pumps, motors, decks are all the same. Only the motor changes.

Kohler is a 23, Briggs a 26 - air filtration is Canister type on the Kohler, flat automotive type on the Briggs. Oil filtration is the same on both.

I'm looking at these for the long run and interested in what you have to say.

Kohler all the way, if your in it for a long time, especially the Horizontal engine, if you were comparing the Kohler and a Briggs Vanguard its a different story

you must be looking at a Grasshopper 223 and a Grasshopper 226V, if you are go with the Kohler powered unit, it will last you longer

Briggs has a long way to go to ever be considered a "commercial" engine in my eyes...not considering the vanguard series. The vanguard series is the only briggs engine that I would consider to be commercial and I would want on a commercial mower.

The Kohler Command Pro is a pretty good engine. I used a horizontal shaft on a demo mower before and thought it did pretty well. I had no issues with it for the few days I had it. Mostly, it was just a different style engine than I was used to since all I have ever used were vertical shaft engines.

I'd opt for the Kohler.

Kohler command. Although I do run a Briggs Vanguard on a 32" for resi backyards and I've had it three years no problems and it always starts up. So they are both pretty good depending on the engine specs. You also need to factor in gas, the smaller engine will use less, but may not have the power for some jobs, but if your within a few horsepower it doesn't make much difference. All things you need to consider when purchasing, look at the long hall. In this indusrtry you don't take it everyday at a time.

Run as far as you can! I have the 27HP from a 2008 Exmark Lazer. I hear problems with the headgaskets and smoking when it starts. 1 out of 10 times when I start it it smokes for about 3 seconds hard then goes away quick. It is embarrassing because it is an expensive and beautiful mower. It does have a crap load of power and the fuel consumption is OK. I changed to Mobil one 10-30 and the smoking wasn't as bad. KOHLER says if you want to use synthetic you have to wait till it has like over 85 hours. I have 300 hours on mine and always starts on the first turn.
