i have a trusty ole harbor freight compactor cost me about $150 used.



im not saying its the best. but it does the job ok. and we have used it on jobs with nuclear testing, and passed compaction. when she dies ill probally replace with a wacker or something similar, but that Briggs motor is a tough cookie to kill.

the tamp is the same brand as the FREE paver saw iv got, a tile guy left it on the job the home owner thought it was mine, i said no not mine i think its the tile guy. after 4 months no one would claim it (ego i guess) so she gave it to me. little 10" blade works great and cheap to operate. that little 110 volt saw is a dream, we cant kill the dumb thing either.

A good rule of thumb is you will pay about $1 per pound of centrifugal force for a good new compactor.

We have a wacker wp1550 and it really only gets used for compacting the pavers into the beading sand. And it does that quite well. As DVS said everything has its uses.

Also I have never heard of a compactor "not being up to icpi spec". They do make a suggestion on what size you should use based on the depth of the lifts you are doing. Bigger compactor bigger lifts. But you could use this compactor doing 1" to 2" lifts max, however I would not recommend it as it will take FOREVER.

I have a Wacker 1550 and this it is a great unit. I use it for all my paver projects including a 3000sqft driveway. Never had an problems with compaction. I use a larger reversible from time to time but mostly for large areas or in place of a roller for like a driveway prepping for asphalt.

I could give 2 craps what ICPI says. Never taken the course never will.

The one you looking at looks in good condition looks like it might had been a rental unit. I am sure you can get it at the auction for $600-$800 which would be a good deal.

Oil weight and equipment have nothing to do with professionalism. Compaction was achieved long before the engine was invented.

Do we really wanna get into a discussion about oil??? Fact of the matter is - I DO have a personal weekend toy with a gas engine that I DO run 15w40 in......YEAR ROUND

15w40 is a thicker oil. It'll crank slower in the winter. Thinner oil breaks down faster. The sooner that engine wears - the sooner you buy a new car or truck. It's called Job Security for the manufacturers.

We usually use a ride on roller for driveways.

But.....our 1st 2 driveways were compacted with a 1550. And no problems at all.

@ tom g I belive its 4800 cf/psi and we have smaller tampers for compaction behind walls clmpared to the 1550 but it rarely gets used..

new i think they are around 2100
this is my exprience with plate compactors I own a rental yard and have tried many different types and brands of plate compactors and reversibles to find the best for the price,
I have had bad luck with Northern tool and the really cheap ones on ebay.

i have had good luck with Bomag and PackerBrothers. I feel that packerbrothers is the best buy for the money because you buy direct i have liked the quality. Bomag has also been good to me but i have pretty much switch to PackerBrothers because simlar quality but prices are lower and customer service has been a good experience
