Gemini Hydros Eaton 771 filters

I worked with you guys on the hydro oil for my older Woods Gemini units. Now I would like to replace the filters. I found them at a grasshopper dealer for $45 each. After looking at these filters, I found a small piece of fiber that's maybe 2" X 3". I can't see spending that kind of money for this. I flushed them out and I'm going to put them back in. Here's the question. What about placing a stainless steel screen on top of the fiber mess filter. I think a 60 or 80 micron would work as a prefilter. The style of hydros I have, has a reservoir cup on top with the filter below. I have seen a top plate that has a screw on type filter instead of the one I have. This filter I have is a poor way of protecting the hydros. Any thoughts mowerman?
