Trying to Find the Right Truck for the Job

I'm trying to figure out what the right truck would be for me. I'm just starting out and I'm not sure as to which way I want to go. I'm trying to decide on either a small truck, or a Full Size Truck. The two that I have picked out are a Ford Ranger extended cab 4wd XLT with the 4.oL 6cyl or a Ford F150 with the 5.4l extended cab with 4wd. I'm a one man show right now and can only afford so much. The Ranger is under 8000 and the F150 is around 15,000. I have light equipment right now.

After towing a mowing trailer with a 1/4 ton vehical for a while I say get the larger 1/2ton truck. The engine and trans in the ranger will stand up fine but the larger truck will handle and stop the trailer better. Fuel usuage will be about the same. The 1/2 ton will give you some growing room also. Which ever truck you get set it up with a good electric trailer brake system.

I am trying to figure out what you call a 1/4 ton vehicle. My Ranger has a payload capacity of 1260 lbs, way above 500 lbs (1/4 ton). I must be missing something here.

Just for the sake of not hijacking the thread, you keep telling yourself that and we will move on.

Figure the most weight you will tow with the truck and check the manufacturers specs for tailer towing and load carrying capacity. Buy accordingly. If you are going to be at the maximum most of the time you would probably be better served buying the bigger vehicle. I tow close to home and very rarely tow with the F350.

Ranger 1/4ton truck
F150 1/2ton truck
F250 3/4ton truck
F350 1ton truck

Yes they will all carry much more weight than what the number says but that is what they are called. I can safely carry more than a 1000lbs in my dodge 1500 but it is still called a 1/2ton truck.

I use a 2wd 1996 ranger 4 cylinder as my regular maintenance vehicle and it pulls a smaller trailer that is around 600-900 pounds loaded up. However my daily route dose not require me to go above 45 mph and I have a 1 ton dually flatbed to do the heavy lifting and haul away. I think just having a 1/4 ton would limit you to the jobs you could do.

I would say neither one, but thats because im a GM guy....
And yes that is correct:
S10, Dakota, Ranger = 1/4 ton
k1500, W1500, F150 = 1/2 ton
K2500, W2500, F250 = 3/4 ton
K3500, W3500, F350 = 1 ton

Thats how they are classified, nomatter the exact payload capacity or gvw

The 4.0 ranger is a great truck, and with elect trailer brakes and do what you need. But if you can swing it the 150 is the way to go, room to grow and it weighs more so more control and safety while towing.

I had a 4.0 ranger that was a great tow truck. Towed better than the wifes 1500 Z71 with the V8. Both were 1998's. Sold it years ago, but still miss that little truck sometimes :-)

Thanks for all the helpful info that you gents provided! I really appreciate it and will take it all into consideration very carefully. By the way, Do you guys get a lot of calls from advertising on the side of your vehicles?
