They are different. I could be wrong, but I don't think they make small portable drill seeders. And even if they do, I don't think you'll find one at your local rental center. I think they are used for bare soil, not overseeding, and usually for agricultural crops.

Don't know what soil is like there ,but in nc it's hard .Attempted one time it took me about 2 min to figure out that it wasn't for me.A plugger works very good though.

Like here the soil is soft in the spring. The later in the year it goes and the drier it gets the harder and harder the soil gets.

Do fall rains soften the soil? do you mulch mow and have access to compost?

I'd start aerating and topdressing with compost at the earliest opportunity...

If you want Spring grass start with a 'dormat seeding' for its earliest start b4 the heat of Summer sets in and kills the seedlings in hard dry soil...

Most of my work occurs around 6000 ft elevation. We don't get much fall rain.

This makes the season pretty short. I've got 2 maybe 3 mowings left this year.
Plus leaves.

Most every one here uses kentucky bluegrass and that comes on fast and dies off fast.

Nobody here knows what over seeding is, certainly not do it every year.
If I had one of those Ryan seeders I could pick up work reseeding yards that have gotten thin over the years.
I've got access to compost thru the city's compost facility but haven't given it a lot of thought on top dressing with that.

What type of equipment do you need? I've got a regular broadcast fertilizer spreader.
I'm thinking that won't put down a thick enough layer.

2 or 3 mowings is about all we got left too... Mow up the pine needles as they fall and usually the grass is done by the time the needles are...
After that, we play with Oak leaves until the snow...

For overseeding, I don't do much more than broadcast seed by hand in thin areas, or barespots then toss compost over the top and 'stitch' it up, if necessary. Nothing very thick, just so it is there for rooting in amongst the brown mulch clippings... this can be accomplished after aerating to start busting up the hard ground, is the point I was getting at... I do all compost spreading with a wheelbarrow and my hand...

It may take a little coordination to flail your hand accross the top of the wheelbarrow full of compost and distribute it evenly over the turf, but once you get the hang of it you can cover alot of ground in a couple of minutes and the person pushing the wheel barrow should not have to stop at all....

That is what I hope to finish up this week because the pine needles can start at anytime now... the possiblity of frost will likely trigger the needles shortly after Wednesday morning...

That Ryan slit seeder above is the Cadillac... Works great, we have one... Also have a unit that mounts on the 3pt hitch of our Kubota... The only think about the Ryan, it's heavy, you'll want to eat your wheaties that morning!!!
