Name That Weed

Hello Everyone. First time posting here and needing some help. I hope this is the correct section.

My mother gets this type of weed in her grass annually. Even when re-sodding major sections (which it seems like she does yearly), it always re-appears.

A little more info on her grass:
Just outside Chicago in Zone 5
Waters her grass like crazy
The area which has this weed (pictures attached) is easily pulled. Doesn't have deep roots.

She is anal on how her grass looks so I'd figure someone here might help identifying this weed.

Looks like nut grass or nut sedge

Roots are wrong for nutsedge--no rhizomes, no nutlets. Stem not triangular--from what little I can see.
I notice poor mowing quality--does not cut cleanly. Also a slight bend in the stem just above the roots. I suspect a low-quality perennial ryegrass, probably seeded years ago.

OR...if it is in distinct clumps...it could be seeds escaped from a tall ornmental grass. Pennisetum rubra for instance. Use Roundup or dig it out, or both.

Grasses cannot be identified with certainty unless the seed head is present.

Ditto with RigglePC. My guess is annual ryegrass (several reasons). If it is annual ryegrass, check this out regarding control.

I just had a fertilizer company come out and they say it's Nimblewill. Do you guys think he's correct?

Was it growing in a mat that you could easily pull away? When I have come across Nimblewill (at least what I thought to be Nimblewill and I could be wrong) this was what I experienced.

Yeah.... I don't think this is Nimblewill. I went back to some documentation I have collected and a couple websites and I'm more inclined to agree with Riggle. You're in Chicago? When did you first start to see this grass? Lots of possibilities. If it is something that has popped up recently I might think it's a type of Bluegrass.

Why dont you get some pictures of it growing in the lawn and then maybe we could figure it out?

Sorry gqnine44, I thought of taking pictures AFTER we already cut up the sod and threw it out. I just reached in and grabbed a few. Thanks for your help though!
