Charging Sales Tax in Massachusetts

Have a question for those in Massachusetts. I was talking to another landscaper in NY and apparently they have to charge their clients sales tax on ALL services including labor portions. It is my understanding that landscaping services are tax exempt, but we are supposed to pay sales tax on the portion of materials sold that we mark up. Is this correct?

From what I understand, you have to charge sales tax on all materials sold if the materials cost is more than 10% of the cost of the job. This includes tax on things you already paid tax on. So you should get a tax ID number and buy your materials without paying tax if you will need to do this.

Now I'm not quoting from experience, I am working around the tax thing right now by having the customer pay for their own materials when possible. But I got this information from a couple of contractors that I know, plus what I have read on the website.

There are also a couple of threads about this subject, just not sure how long ago.
