You guys are omitting one very important step when using cleaning solvents on carbs.
The solvents eat the sealants around the welch plugs. If you don't reseal them,
The carb can flood and the welch plugs can fall out.

I dont think you understood me. I was speaking about a carb cleaning vat, not a fuel additive.

Yeah I knew what you were saying....I've got an ultrasonic cleaner myself...
I'm having a hard time believing that they don't make a welch plug sealant that works.
They are sealing them with something at the factory in china....

This thread is like YouTube, It started as a fuel additive discussion then turned into repairing carbs properly by tear-down cleaning.


I don't do nails so have no polish handy, I use a drop of high strength Loctite thread locker on welch plugs.....

Just tying up a few loose ends.....
They ran out of ways to defend the usefulness of the snake oils.
So I guess the coversation morphed into something they had a little more knowledge of.
I have been sealing welch plugs with nail polish since the 80's. (Still using the same bottle)
That's what they taught me to use at the Skil Factory Service Center.

Installing new welch plugs and sealing with super glue works just fine--never had any call backs. I prefer the gel over the thin variety as you minimize the risk of it seeping past the welch plug into the ports below. I never did feel that finger nail polish was a good choice since it is lacquer based, therefore subject to carbon based compounds.

Well, Slapper, I see I missed you by a few minutes and you missed another loose end. I do think you are correct on the finger nail polish being recommended--seem to recall reading it in Walbro repair info. I attended an Echo update in the early 90's and the tech then was recommending super glue. I do recall when ethanol came on the scene, I seemed to find a lot of loose, crinkly sealant around the welch plugs and even displaced welch plugs--don't know what the OEM's were using.

Rob, the HD locktite probably is a good choice that I'll have to give a try. On the other hand, it's good to know that I'm not the only "two stroke joke" or are you referring to welch plugs in general.

i just want to add that snake oil will likley
clean out your wallet fast.
fresh gas proper oil mix is all you need

Not possible, if it comes in a nice aluminum can and costs a fortune it has to be good.
