Free tool for analyzing and optimizing your web pages

This is a nice utility that is completely free. It will give you reports on your pages (you have to do them one at a time) to let you know how well it preforms in getting the page to load ASAP, and tips for improving things.

Granted, some of the things it recommendations may be over your head (or in the case of server suggestions, may be out of your control), but if you have questions about something it tells you, ask here and I'll try to help.

One interesting feature it has: Timeline. As you are probably aware, when you go to your web page, it consists of many parts, the HTML behind it, CSS for styling, JS for scripting, Images, Flash files, etc. Well these items all take time to load. Timeline will show you in a graphical view how things will load into your browser. (see attached file for an example of one)

After you have a report, go to the Timeline tab. In the top left corner, click on "View Larger" (wish you could get this full window). As you hover over the color bars on the right half, you get details and explanation of the colors. On the left side, if you click on the [+] you will see detailed information, more geekish, but if you curious you can check.

Scroll to the bottom of the timeline, you will see how many requests the browser had to send to the server to get items, how much total data it received from the server, and how much total time it took for the page to fully display. Pretty much you want ALL of these to be as little as possible.

In reviewing some peoples sites on here, several of the wordpress themes have a lot of excess call to CSS/JS for their plugins. Each call add overhead to the page load, this gives you a really good visual view. (their recommendations will actually detect WP and give a link to special tips for it)

Also, if you get into advanced settings, you can tell it a location to test from. Default I believe is in Vancouver,

Enjoy using it, again, if you need help with anything it suggests, post it here.
