Cornerstone was created by a gentleman from Canada named Vern. Most block is created by an engineer. A company has a vision of a block they want to produce so they pay their engineer to design the block. Vern is NOT an engineer!
Vern used to be a retaining wall contractor, and has constructed monsterous walls ALL OVER the United States and Canada. He took his knowledge that he developed in the field and created a block with it. There isn't a single application that this block can not be used for. Yes, it has holes. Basically the block is designed to accomadate any scenerio under the sun. If anyone ever has the opportunity to hear Vern (the creator of Cornerstone) speak - you would be a fool to pass it up. I would miss my kid's birthday party to hear Vern speak! He is very fascinating, full of knowledge and experitse, he's unbelievable. .

I believe they call it a "lug". This is what gives each course of block a 1/2" batter. This accomplishes what pins and lips on other block accomplishes. But see, lips on other block can make radiuses a pain in the hiney because you have to wack some of the lip off to make the curve.
(and in my opinion, helps keep the block from sliding forward...) And if the lugs come out of the mold wrong (mis-shaped, defective, etc) - the block gets sold as "seconds" and we use seconds for the base course. .
