Engine Replacement?

Question: Apparently someone forgot to check the oil on one of our mowers today, and it was shooting white smoke, knocking, ect. They said it made a loud bang from the OHV, which was leaking, and when they tried to restart it, the flywheel was not catching the mower engine at all. The oil in the engine was VERY low. It is a Kohler 27 Engine, on a Husqvarna LZ6127 that I had just posted about a few days ago. Looking into similar engines goes for about 1500-2500 which is almost what we bought the mower for a month ago. Can this all be fixed by replacing parts, or is the engine pretty much done for at this point?
