need tips/advice before designer comes in

i have a designer lined up for aroun $350.

3 revisions or so of 3d rendering and construction drawings to scale.

i dont really know exactly what i'm after. just want smething appealing with low maintenance.

looking for a entrance stone up by left coming in on the drive way. a row of evergreens on the north side. some gardens in the middle. a gazebo or picnic area under the big tree.

maybe you guys could give me some tips. on what to do with the space.

could i do rocks in the beds for less maintenance or is cedar mulch the norm?

the tree is north of me taking the picture.

i was thinking the picnic/gazeo area could go somewhere by the big tree.

i plan on someday knocking this down once i can get a few years of growth on some decent trees. this one is kind of narkey. i almost thought of knocking it down.

There is not much for people to tell you. You need to have an idea of how you want to live and how you might want to use the site . That is what it is all about. The rest of design is about taking that and making it function as well as possible, make it look nice, and meet your maintenance and budget commitments.

I don't think it is going to happen between where you are starting from and the type of "designer" you hired. It sounds like you really have not concentrated on what you want and the designer is more of an illustrator than a designer (based on what you'll get and the price).

You either need to get a much better handle of what you want in order to use that type of designer that you have hired, or you need to hire a designer who is a facilitator. That person can get you to focus and work with you to determine what you really want and need to meet your lifestyle and the rest of the design will follow.

Right now you are by-passing the most important part - determining the both the active and passive uses of the property. No one here can list those out for you. They come from you, although it is very common to need an experienced designer to help you realize what those are. You seem to be doing what is a very common thing - focussing on the result rather than the needs.

Think abstract first then work toward specific. Think big picture then work toward details. If not, you'll have a pretty paint job on a wreck.

I think I have some good ideas of what I want. I just need to get them on paper and make it flow.

Also open to other opinions on what I should do with the space to see if I'd like something else a little better.

ok, I have to ask: are you using someone local, or one of these online designers?

using a local gal. she lives a mile or 2 down the road.

she seems to know her stuff.

i'm waiting to burn that pile of brush before i get her out there.

she will then take pictures of the site then place landscaping items in pictures.
