rust on cool season grasses

I'm a few fescue and rye lawns with what appears to be rust. It is bright orange and rubs off on your shoes i can also see a nice "cloud" as the dogs runs through. The lawns I take care of have already had an application of 1-1.5 pounds of slow release N in late February.

The diagnosis of rust is proper fertilization and then a fungicide. I assume my fertilizer is good. I would assume my next step is fungicide? Maybe propicinizole since I have it on hand.

I'm also attaching a poor cell phone picture. Any more suggestions?

It's the ryegrass. Spray it with propiconizole at label rates and intervals and report back. Disclaimer: as long as it is labled for rust on turf. Which I'm sure it is.

Snyder our weather has been all over the place. We had some 80's in February and 50's in April. Went though about 2 weeks recently without rain. Last few weeks have been in 70's and lows in 50's.

Rust is a fall disease...until now. It is common on grass that was newly seeded. Some ryegrasses are very susceptible. Extra nitrogen is the least costly way to control it. You will get darker green--but more mowing.

Next time look for a rye that is rust resistant. If you can find one, that is...

did an app of propiconozole today. figured I'd give it a shot since this was my lawn. No rain until the end of the week so may fert again.

I didn't realize it was this bad until I was finished!!

Would you care to reveal what seed was used...so the rest of us can avoid it. Is it newly seeded?

More rapid growth due to warm weather, plenty of moisture and more nitrogen should take care of it.

Let us know how the fungicide propoconizole works, OK?

I wouldn't waste your time with fungicide unless they want to pay it. The rust will pass, hit it hard with a quality fert and the rust will go away. That is what I was told when I posted with a rust problem.

the seed was futura 3000 perinnial rye grass. The lawn is my personal home so I don't mind spraying. I thought it would pass but the entire lawn is covered now. The 80-90 degree days should be here soon and it will be interesting how fertilizing rye this late will work. Its the cure but it also may be a waste of money since the heat will take care of the rye.

This is a house we moved into with little or no grass. I seeded with rye for curb appeal but hope to trasition to bermuda or something else this summer.
