17 hp Kawasaki and black smoke

I idle it down when going around planting beds. When I go to rev it back up to full throttle it hesitates a little and black smoke comes out. I was thinking that maybe the ignition coils needed adjusting with a feeler gauge. Any suggestions. Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem with a 23 hp Kawasaki. Hesitates, throws out black smoke and then runs fine. Pulled the plugs and they were black as the ace of spades. Hope someone has an idea about this.

I'm assuming this means you're backing off the throttle while mowing. Are the blades engaged when you do this? Is your mower designed to run the blades at anything less than full throttle?

Both my mowers require the throttle to be kept full open when the blades are engaged. The engines are designed to sustain the load of the blades only at full throttle: they can't take the load at anything less, and anything less, with the blades engaged, is very, very bad for them. With the blades engaged and throttle full open, the operator controls are used to control the speed (movement) of the mower.

Does your mower operate differently? My 48" hydro is 14 hp if I remember correctly. A bit less than 17 hp, but not that much less. If I used the throttle to control the speed (movement) of the mower with the blades engaged, it wouldn't like it. Is this what you're doing? Just trying to help, and curious to know.

the black smoke is a product of incomplete combustion. as you gas on it that sends more fuel and at first it will burn rich , hence the black smoke. the black on the plugs is caused by the same thing. your muffler will eventually clog up with carbon also and make the machine run bad also.
