Stick Edger

I'm pretty good at edging with a string trimmer/weed eater, but now trying to edge with a stick edger and find it not as easy as a string trimmer. How do you keep the blade from hitting the concrete? Do you walk backwards when using a stick edger, or forward?
When you make tree rings(or shrub beds), do you cut the circle, then us a shovel in the inside to lower the bed?

How long do you go before changing your stick edger blade? Do you have it sharpened, or you just replace it?

When it to short to cut any more. Just replace them.

It is partly getting use to using. With time you will go faster then with a line trimmer.

Also for the first time and maybe it will take a second time a property is done using a stick edger once the edging has been done all the thick vegetation and roots are gone and it is as a channel/groove is left so that when you come back the next week the blade does not have to clear our a new groove so then you will go a lot faster.

You don't want the blades sharp, you want it squared off, as it sharpens itself it doesn't cut as good

the first time you do it go slow so you can dig the edge pretty deep. the next time you will be able to go fast since the trench is already there.

the first time you are cutting alot of dirt as well as the grass. the second time forward you are mostly just cutting the grass part since the dirt is gone from the first edging.

I used it again yesterday, and I'm getting better. The sparks against the sidewalk is normal?

sparks is normal...let it grind against the sidewalk/concrete as a guide. It's going to spark and make loud noises but that's just how it works. Blades are cheap from
j-thomas.com. We go through about 10-12 a week
Some condos and large HOA we will go through 1-3 blades each.
Normal residential lawn we can get usually 20 yards or so per blade
