Lawnboy leaking gas under/behind air filter

I had a strange occurrence with my Lawnboy self propelled mower yesterday and this morning. I took it out of the shed, started it up, and walked it to the front of my house where I turned it off to gas it up. Once filled I tried to start it again and it wouldn't start.

Then I noticed it was leaking pretty steadily from what seemed to be under and behind the front corner of the air filter. It is a gold series engine by Honda @160 and only a couple seasons old.

So I took the air filter off and the plate holding the carb to see exactly where it was leaking from and turned the fuel valve to open and... no leak. Go figure.

I put it back together, started it up and cut the lawn this morning. Ran great- no leak.

Any thoughts? I expect more trouble.

I have a honda hrx 217, When I mow on a slope ( carb side down) it drips gas out of the same place. I put a new carb on it and it still does it. I talked to a dealer and he said it is draining out of the float bowl. Most engines he works on, does the same if it is tilted carb side down. The kawasaki engine don`t because it has a elbo turned up to the air filter. Gas drains into the elbo, then drains back into the carb when it gets level again. I need to invent a elbo for honda engines.
