The one thing that still amazes me today is how dull the blades can be and still give you a clean cut at speed. They can be round as a pencil not that I recommend it. What I do find effects the QOC, at least up here, is if the deck gets packed up. Keep the deck clean and she'll cut. There are some baffles available after the fact to help with QOC if you have any problems also.

Thanks for the all the feedback. Needless to say, I am pretty excited about my new mower.

I am going to service it here in the next few days. How does this sound?
- Going with OEM filters except for maybe using a Wix fuel filter
- Amsoil Formula 4-Stroke 10W-30/SAE 30 Small Engine Oil in the motor
- Amsoil 20W50 or Mobil 1 15w50 in the hydraulic system
- Going with the OREGON 94-055 blades

Any suggestions or advice on this? There is only 1 hydraulic filter right? Anybody know the motor and hydraulic system fluid capacities?

Thanks again for all the feedback and help.

Operator and Parts manuals are available for the downloading from Hustler Turf website. Should answer just about any question you might have regarding fluids and such.

When you get around to mowing your yard, try not to smile too much, it'll make your wife think you aren't working. Not to mention she'll want to give it a try.

Make sure the S E Amsoil has the zinc in it. I was trying to determine that myself and couldn't find it on their web. The Z Rod would be another good option IMO. I'd personally go with an Amsoil filter as well if offered. I know they make some to fit Kawasaki. More $s but you get what you pay for. If not Amsoil then I'd stick with the $10 OEM. I service once a season or 100 hrs.

You are correct on there only being one hydro filter. Big spin on under reservoir. I use to run Mobil One years ago but I'd stay with the Amsoil if possible. There is also an additive that Hustler requires to be put in with the hydro fluid called Lubrizol. I think it has zinc in it and who knows what else. You may want to call a dealer or better yet tech at Hustler direct and ask them if it's required if using a high zinc oil already. I had one person that said it would possibly foam or expand and push out if I used both.

IIRK I believe hyrdros hold just slightly over 2 gallons with the filter.

The bolts for the anti-scalp wheels are ever so slightly different then what I found at the hardware store for some reason. Keep all the bolts and hardware and extra wheels in stock on you truck. Usually unless you tag a wheel with the blades after it's come off or just plain loose it, they can be reused for years. I have some on the outer edge of my deck that are almost worn flat at 1000 hrs. This is one thing they improved on the VX4 by recessing them into the deck and supporting both ends of the bolt.

Yea, my wife still jumps on the Hustler if give the choice. Gravelys too new and has a separate parking brake!! What were they thinking?

Congrats! I am sure you are excited, that's a fine machine, looks like you got a steal. Now I want a Super Z I not sure if Hustler still sells Super oil or not, but they had thier own label. This post is from a few years ago. Hustler has a page on this site and you can always stop in there with any questions and PJ will get you fixed up. Good guy and always gives you a fast reply. Happy mowing.

Hustler Super oil.

I am not married, so there is no woman to try and get in between me and my mower. However, it might be nice to have a woman around to keep my blades sharp and my deck clean.
