Me too. I think that's the only healthy way to look at it. Oh I whined and cried a little but with no one to cover my butt it wasn't long before I got off it.

I turned 51 in May and started this full time when I lost my job,May 2000. I can do more and feel better than 12 years ago. Retire??? That is what kills alot of people. Taking it easy and living well, eating and drinking. We have a family business and my wife and I work 6 days a week and still have time for family. My wife runs her own truck and our 19 year old daughter helps her. She will be joining the business full time when she finishes college at the community college. Our 16 year old son is starting part time this summer. My hat goes off to Roger and he is a real inspiration to me. I don't care who calls me crazy, I feel blessed to keep working. Matt

I got fed up with working for auto shop owners. I did it for 30 years. Then one day after all that time the guy I was working for told me I had to pull the engine out of the caddy. It had the northstar engine/drivetrain and I've NEVER even worked on one before. I tried to tell him I was not comfortable with doing it and his comment was you have to learn some time. My comment back was that I DON'T have to learn how to do a northstar engine in a caddy because I quit. I had the thought of doing lawncare years before but was working at what I thought at the time was a well paying good job so I stayed in the auto industry. Fast forward and I'm growing slowly with no advertising. I couldn't be happier.

I really envy you getting so much of your family involved. That is great, my son helps me out on odd jobs but really doesn't care for this type of work. He is working retail right now and is still in high school. My middle child, she is going to college at CSU and my oldest she is married and now has two kids. My wife works full-time doing accounting for a Biz and does our books also (I am so thankful of that).

Ya I agree with you, Roger taking the bull by the horns at 63 years of age is great, and he will do just fine. It just sucks that he forced out of his job and all that.

Im a X mechanic also. The automotive industry has nearly made it impossible for a mechanic to make a living. I dont miss that life whatsoever.

Im als an old fard,, 47 but still out many of the younger crowd, however the 12 hour days hurt and Im learning to slow down "slightly'

I was a mechanic as well...hated it. I did it and did it well but I couldn't take it anymore. It is an ever changing technology...sure it's still a 4 stroke engine and it still runs on gas...but god almighty could they make them anymore complicated?

Northstar...my old boss had one, what a piece of garbage. 3000 miles and a blown engine from a failed oil pump.

The investment you need to turn wrenches insnt realisic to the current pay system that mechanics have to endure. Its super hard to find anyone who can fix cars anymore.

You are correct, especially if you do not work at a dealer who supplies you with every single electronic gizmo to work on a certain brand of cars and the only thing you buy is hand tools.
