kohler cv740s

engine is smoking burning oil and low on power. im assuming its got a blown headgasket. the model # is cv740s the spec# is cv740-0023 the serial # is 3516507221 the build date is 6/14/2005. does anyone know if this engine was a culprit of the flywheel keyway problem. Ive read online some guys rebuild these (headgasket kits) and there problem free and some guys rebuild and they tear up again. Im not wanting to shell out a bunch of money on an entire new engine if its not necessary . any and all info is appreciated

Cory...your post is all over the map..
Flywheel keyway problems....don't see too many of them...
You can't assume that you have a bad headgasket because its burning oil and low on power...you have to check the compression or do a leakdown test.
Replacing the head gasket is not rebuilding the engine..
Your knowledge of engines is limited..your engine is 7 years old...

this Kohler engine is on a Husqvarna 60" zero turn. I made this posting for a friend of mine. I'm quite aware that doing a top end job on a lawn mower is not a full rebuild. Guess i was looking for someone on this site that had similar experiences. I read online that a variation of the cv740s came w a 22 degree flywheel and was suppose to have a 16 degree and was blowing head-gaskets. due to too much compression. My buddy has already done the head-gaskets once on this machine. My knowledge of engines is not at all limited i just have not worked on lawn mowers or Kohler engines furthermore. I was looking for insight and some one that could shed some light with similar experiences. A lot of times certain engines have been known to have similar problems. Someone might know that these motors warp heads or are junk all together.

Your engine is in the serial number range but the problem wasn't with that model. Unless the gskt's were replace by the book, they might blow again. There is a (another) new gasket design, now with a fire ring around the combustion chamber. It looks like a true improvement over the old. I have not seen any of the newest design blow yet, but time will tell.

We normally consider any repair worthwhile until we get into the crankshaft / cylinder / connecting rod area, once we're into the main block we won't fool with it and if it involved the valves it might be a bit tricky but just a cylinder head gasket is certainly minor in my book and I'd give it a shot.
