I'm gonna pick up a Pro-800 and a GFL-3000 in the next few weeks.
The 521/521a locators are pretty standard and work well. I have an Armada Pro-700 that has done very well for me too.
What will you be locating? Just wire paths and solenoids?

521 is the richdel 205 of locators. Solid and been around forever plus you'll find lots of irrigators to get tips from since pretty much all of them have used it. They've changed the new ones some I see though.

You're absolutely correct about the 521 Peter. It has been around forever with very few improvements other than upgrading the filters.
The 521a boasts the longer antenna wand and external speaker, both of these features were added to compete with the Pro-tech 600.
I have used the 521a more than a few times and feel that it does its job, but i also feel that the best locator is between your ears and any of these locators are just tools. Some of these tools are more advanced than others though.
It has taken me 3 years on this forum to convince the viewers of the irrigation forum to read the Progressive manual and learn to connect the transmitter correctly.
It just makes sense that the manual would provide the information to use the equipment properly.
As far as having support from other 521 users re-read my last statement.
I don't have anything to gain or lose from a persons purchase of any locator, not a dime.
I do know what i like in a locator and the 800 is closer than the 521a.
As i said earlier, it's the OPs choice.

I think throwing the "rep" comment around is not fair and if it is made as a joke then I will laugh with you

I had one of the "Big Dogs" from TUCOR in my office today and when I mentioned the SnapShot TDR he was like a me in high school trying to cheat off the smart kids!!

The minute he walked out the door he was calling his tech department. Now this is a guy that really knows his stuff and I could only dream of having the skills this man has for decoder systems.

I guess my point in all this, I would never have heard of a TDR if it were not for this forum and Jim's advice. Many people come and go, so we all may read the same comments all the time it has to be repeated for those that have a life and do not read Lawn Site all the time like us
