Gentelmen:

From time to time I come back here and offer advice, mainly from what I see as a major topic,

I see many post about who took my client, home owners are cheep, and someone advertised in a mail bos of the lawn I was cutting......

Again, Get a business plan and STICK with it.....

sit down and determain what type of business do I want ?
where do I want to be ? In 6 months ? In 1 year ? in 3 years? in 5 years ?
and YES then in 10, 20 and even 30 years ????

instead of waisting time on being undercut by 10, 15.00

Let it go, if someone syas they can cut a lawn for 25.00 and your charging 65.00 SO be it.
BE the BEST that there is in your field.
Trust me, you dont have time to spend on 25.00 Jobs, NOR 50,00.......

if someone can do this job for this, LET THEM. AND THEN WATCH THEM.
if they do a GOOD JOB. PUT THEM ON THE PAYROLL. it's called subcantracting.
Most of the time a sub will take 80%.
can you live on 20%............... YES....
if you had, 300 clients. and you took 20% with out doing anyhting.
WELL you do the math......

if you want to be a fly by night LCO, Then you will deal with others undercutting you by 5.00

Gentelmen: It;s NOT worth it, provide the BEST possable service you can. and CHARGE accordingly.

Leave the little lowballers alone, you are going somewhere. and you dont have time to deal with the SCRAP....... THe bottom feeders.

only go after the high end custoemrs. do your research, and I SWEAR. in 2 years you can retire, to the office........

Go out there and do this, than come back in 2 years and call me a lier.

YOU WONT.......

as far as yor business plan, update it offten, it's for your eyes only. learn from it.

write down waht happened today, whay it happened. also writh down, things like WOW I didn't think this customer would have paid this much.

ALSO, keep track of your profet margin.......

DO THE NUMBERS EVERY DAY::::::::

do then weekly:
do them monthly:

Find out what your profet is, where its better, and where it SUCKS.

you cant drive 10 miles spend 30 minutes at a job and collect 45.00
YOU JUST CANT....

after you learn your profet, then you will have a GREAT understanding of what your worth,
and what you can charge. DROP the deadbeats......

We have dropped customers simply becasue they pay late every month......
by them paying late. we would have to make another trip to the bank to deposit there check, and this would cost me Right at 25.00 to do this.....

Whtch the numbers Gentelmen...

BEST OF LUCK

Great advice...I have yet to lose a customer to a lower price. If I did, I wouldn't care...

This should be the 1st book of geneses of the lawn care bible. Let them go to the undercutters.

Honestly I have been thinking about calling one of these guys who advertise 15-20.00 for any lawn to come tackle my 2 acres. Lord knows I barely have time to do it and hell you can't beat 30-40 bux a month. Not to mention the maniacal enjoyment I would get from sipping lemonade and watching them while they work.

it's one of the oldest tricks in the book...

on one hand it's NOT really a trick, your working. by getting the customer, your just letting someone else do the work. Also it keeps them busy, so they dont have time to go get custoemrs. YOU GET THEM, then have them go provide the service

Best of luck

I see that goal, and suggestion so much on here. To go after only the high end. I dont know how high end you are talking but those are the worst people to deal with. They are so bad. I probably wouldnt bother writing it if it wasnt so fresh in my mind after today. If you had ALL high end you would have thee most volatile, unstable, stressful business ever. Theres my 02 on high end.

That's laughable, you obviously don't have any true high-end clients

guess it depends on your definition of high end. But the general meaning around here seems to be the "elitist" crowd. The rich. Maybe your meaning of high end is like mine and has much less to do with their net worth. Just Good paying, respectful, etc I do have very good customers who are rich but they are rare and really dont pay any more. They might have more work overall for you.

That would be because there aren't enough of them...

But some might be surprised what I find...
Where MOST Lco's are working...
And where MOST good clients are...
Generally are not the same neighborhood.
