Reducing mowing height of a zoysia lawn

I have several zoysia lawns where I would like to lower the mowing height. They are currently cut a 3" plus. I know it is too late in the year to get the height down this year but I want to get a plan together for next year. My grasses go dormant late Nov thru early March. What would be a good strategy starting out next year? Dethatch, if so what device would you use? Have any of you used growth regualtors on zoysia?

Here in Hawaii, an incorrectly mowed zoysia lawn is cut down to the ground. Then it can be thinned out with a Verticut machine. Not a dethatcher. A Verticut machine uses solid blades set to cut down to just above soil level. In your area, this should be done in spring, before the active growth stage. Don't bother with doing all of this work unless the lawn is going to be maintained at or under 1" during the year. Excessive rates of N, especially if applied at infrequent intervals will make it hard to maintain zoysia at an inch or less. Large granules do not work very well on a zoysia lawn because the turf gets so dense. You will need to do the fertilization with either greens grade fertilizers or liquids.

Ar,
Do you perform leaf cleanups during the fall season??
My Zoysia lawns is cut at 2-3 inches depending on certain site factors. After the lawn goes dormant, I am using equipment to remove the leaves and slowly cutting the turf down each cleanup.
At the end of the season, for me around January, the lawn is already down to 2 inches and reduced of thatch and dead stems.
If you want it lower, then cut is lower at the time of dormancy and allow it to sit during the winter. I haven't had problems with disease, etc. as of yet from this practice.
