Exmark help

I have a belt drive exmark metro that is lurching when in first and second gear but not the others. It doesnt bog and it happens whether I'm cutting or just driving it. This is my first commercial mower but I have done repairs on old John Deere tractors so I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. But the question is where should I start looking for the problem?

Worn shift keys and possibly inner mating surfaces on first and second gears, This will require trans dis-assembly.....

Here's a service manual download....

That link worked. Should I wait till winter to do this project if I dont use gears 2 and 3 or is it a quick fix that I can get done before next weeks cutting? This is only used on my lawn so not alot of hours of use considering the lack of rain.
