Hmm, the dealer should be able to tell you the year it was made. Technically, Scag doesn't have year models but they change the first letter of the serial number every year. Best I recall, the # 3 was 1998, so a 7 would be a 2002 model. There is an old thread around somewhere, if you want to search for it.

Maybe the dealer would rather you not know what the build date is?

It's a 2002 mower. You have the advantage deck, current frame, last year of the 10cc pumps.

RCWP is a good place to find pricing on OEM parts but I go to the local dealer to order most of the time.

Scag has a manual section where you can find a owners and parts manual also.

Yep, if this mower is actually an '02, apparently it's just what I was afraid of. It appears that the dealer didn't want you to know that he was selling you a mower that is 10 years old. It may not make any difference to you right now, but it would make a huge difference to me. And, it probably will make a big difference to you too when you try to sell the mower.

For example, let's say 5 years down the road you want another new mower and want to sell this one. You're gonna be stuck trying to convince a potential buyer that a 15 year old mower is worth just as much as a 5 year old mower. Maybe it's just me, but I see a big problem there. You know, a year, or maybe even 2, wouldn't be a big deal....but 10?

I'm sorry, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but this situation wouldn't work for me (unless the price reflected the age).

I see one way out though, you can always use it until it is completely worn out and then the "build date" doesn't matter.

Good luck!
Stan

Your thinking to much of it as a automoblie vs it as a piece of equipment.

Not thinking about autos at all. It's a fact, like it or not, a piece of eqp that is 10 years older than another that is otherwise the same, will not bring the same money. I bought and sold eqp all through the 80's.
