The flat thrust washers that are between the gears are probably worn out..
The washers are what lock the keys into the gears...
Also look at the gears to see if there is any wear in the area that the keys ride in.

The washers are directional...make sure they go in the right direction.

The washers have a hump on 1 side....look at them when you disassemble the shaft..
I realize you need to run the mower till you get the parts...
Ideally ....I would disassemble and inspect before I ordered the parts.

ok the tranny is apart....i inspected the washers and now of them seem bent, any abnormal wear, they all look the same...i did have one washer oriented the wrong way...and i am assuming the taper on the washer faces away from the gear so when the shift keys have engaged the washer it will keep tension on it...also i found a schematic online so i am going to compare what i have done to what is in the schematic...anything else i need to look for?
